It is claimed by a select few sources that Union Pacific 9000 has a clearance crank on the front axle to prevent the middle connecting rod from fowling on the front coupled axle.
As can clearly be seen below in the photo I took of the underside of 9000s front coupled axle, the axle is plain and there is no crank to be found. You can see the connecting rod right above it.
